Surface vs. Strategic Learners

According to Bain there are three types of learners. The first type of learners are surface learners who “look for facts and words they could memorize… surface learners usually focus only on passing the exam, not on ever using anything they read” the second type of learners are strategic learners. Strategic learners ” intend to simply make good grades, often for the sake of graduate or professional school… they will usually shine in the classroom and make their parents proud of their high marks.” The third type of learner is the deep learners. Deep learners “posses the ability and the attitude both to recognize and even to relish the opportunity and the necessity for invention”

I like to think I am a deep learner. I try to learn not just for the grades or for school, but I like to try to apply it to life and bridge off of things I have learned in the past. I have definitely been both a strategic learner and a surface learner before too though. I do study sometimes just to memorize facts to pass a test or learn a concept only for the good grade.

  • You did a good job explaining what they say about the different types of leaners and then explaining your “I say” about what type of learner you think you are. I think we have all be every time of leaner too and I like that you mentioned that.

    • You use the quotes to explain the types of learners which is helpful for the reader because it gives your opinion and the opinion of someone else as well which makes your argument more valid.
