How I Made a Difference

This semester was my second semester of clinical. While I made a difference in patient’s lives in the first semester, I really feel as though I made a stronger connection to one of my patients this semester. A few weeks ago I had a patient who was feeling very lonely. I took the time to sit with him and feed him his breakfast. While in there I sat and talked with him for a while. I think it really made a difference in the way he was feeling because I took the time out of my day to sit and get to know him and his story. He told me how he has not had any visitors in a while and I think it made him feel special that I sat with him. This is important because patients deserve to feel seen and heard. When a nurse or anyone working takes the time out of their day to really get to know the patient and sit with them for even just a short period of time, it can completely change how the patient feels. It made me feel good to know that I was the one who made him feel good that day because I did something so simple as to just sit and talk with him while he ate breakfast. Doing something so small like that can make a big impact on patients and you do not even realize. We as nurses have to be considerate about these things because something so simple and small to us can make someone’s whole day.
