My pre-existing knowledge of Human Trafficking prior to this discussion was minimal. I did not realize there were different types of trafficking, I clumped them all into one category. I knew most of the victims had tattoos of some sort and were closed off and afraid however I did not know much detail about specific tattoos, or how to approach talking to a victim. After this discussion I learned a lot about the subject and how to look for red flags. Along with that, I learned how to talk to patients who are being trafficked. The discussion was really interesting to learn more about the subject because I really had very minimal knowledge on it. It was a subject I thought wasn’t as prevalent in our area. And after the discussion I learned that I was wrong. I learned that anyone could be a victim and that I need to educate myself on what to look for and how to handle those situations. I will take what we learned in today’s lecture and apply it to my practice as a registered nurse because I will now be aware that these situations are everywhere, each situation is different, and that I need to handle these situations with the utmost care and patience. I know what signs to look for, and how to approach a situation if I think someone is a victim.
