Needle Exchange Program Reflection

Prior to this class I did not know much about the Needle Exchange Program. I had heard about it a few times but I had never really been told about it and how it works and helps individuals in the community. I knew that people would go there to trade in dirty needles for clean needles but other than that I really did not know anything else about it. This presentation changed my pre-existing thoughts about this program because it taught me that it was more than just trading in needles. They provide many resources for all individuals and work with the individuals to help make sure they get the resources they need and provide referrals for resources if they can not provide what the individual needs/wants.

There are many strategies that can be put in place to resolve healthcare disparities and improve the health of individuals within certain populations. One of those strategies is to create more programs like the Needle Exchange to provide resources to those who may not be able to access them elsewhere. By having programs that support a wide variety of healthcare, individuals can gain resources and support in ways that make it more accessible and less intimidating than traditional doctors offices or hospitals. I will apply what I learned in today’s presentation throughout my nursing practice by educating myself on all the programs that are around my area and all the resources that I can provide to my patients in case they need them. By educating and exposing myself to them, I am able to provide better knowledge and care to my patients.
