Great work with your cover letter and resume drafts. Below, I have included some tips! I hope this helps!
Cover letter:
1.) I think you did a great job listing your essential skills that you gained as a nursing student. Though these skills will make you a great nurse, they are a little bit generic. Employers will already expect you to have these skills. I think you can maybe add some unique skills into the mix that makes your cover letter stick out!
2.) Since this cover letter is directed towards a job listing at MMC, maybe you can make a connection regarding how you had many clinical experiences there. You can explain the impact this had on you and how it led to your choice to work here.
3.) I think it would be great to say how this specific job is important to you! What makes this job stick out from the other listings, and how will this benefit not only you but also the organization?
Resume:
1.) I love how you made the resume very easy to navigate with the headers! One header that I see you are missing is your clinical rotation summary. Make sure to include this, as employers care about this the most for nurses!
2.) Your first page looks very visually appealing to the eye, but the other two pages tend to have a lot of white space. Maybe you can add the clinical rotation summary to this white space to make it feel more complete.
3.) I love how you used an action verb for EVERY single bullet point! Since you are still working as an assistant cheerleading coach, you could change these verbs to present tense rather than past tense.
Cover letter: The skills you listed are great I would add some more personalized skills that you have gained in clinical that would make you a good nurse in the operating room. Another piece of advice would be to make the cover letter more personalized and tailored to the job you are applying for.
Resume: I love the way your resume looks its really appealing to the eye! I do think that you could shrink the header a little bit, that way you can condense it down to 1-2 pages. Also add your clinical experience! I would reduce the amount of bullet points under each job experience to about 3-4 main bullets that really stand out! Look for skills that are transferable between jobs.
Hey Lindsay! You did a great job with these submissions.
Cover Letter:
1.) I like how you kept it simple and used the formatting that was given and kept it professional. the formatting looks great by the way.
2.) I recommend going into more personalization on your submission. It is a great way to show that you can fit into the role you want.
3.) I believe your skills and values are important and I like how you elaborated on that in the letter. The letter is going to MMC but i gather your not sure what nursing field you want to study in thats okay! When you do this letter is a great start to show the professional skills you possess.
Resume:
1.) I really enjoyed the different action verbs you used throughout your resume. You gave good descriptor words and it was easy to read.
2.) I would like to recommend to maybe shorten this a little. Resumes are usually only 1-2 pages.
3.) Your template really does have a nice visual appeal to it. It is easy to read, but I think the white space is uneven in some of the resume. i would recommend adjusting some of the spacing to make it more balanced. Great Job!
In your cover letter, you did a good job at reflecting on what skills you have learned in nursing school that would help you succeed in this role you are applying for. My recommendation for your cover letter would be to make it a little bit more personable! After reading it, there wasn’t one part of it that stuck out to me and you want there to be something that catches the employers eye and makes them want to learn more about you!
I really like how unique your resume looks, the color and overall appearance is something that would definitely catch the eye of anyone flipping through a stack of resumes. I also think that you have some good relevant experience and content an employer would be looking for! My recommendation is to play around with formatting a little bit. Some of the headings are really big and take too much of your focus. Also maybe bring your education to the top because that is going to be one of the first things an employer is going to be looking for and include what you’ve done while at school like those clinical rotations!!
Hi Lindsey,
I read over your resume and cover letter, and I thought they were great. Regarding your cover letter, I liked how you pointed out what skills you have that make you a candidate from the start. It might be helpful to make those a little more personal since those are ones that do not necessarily stand out. I would also add in work experience you may have in the medical field and how that better prepared you for the job. I would also add how you would contribute to the organizations values and why you want to be a part of the organization! Your resume stood out to me because of how easy to follow it is and I love the pops of color. You used some great action verbs and they really stood out. Some suggestions I have include reducing the white space on pages two and three that way you can make better use of the page and reduce the length of your resume. Reducing the bullets points under each job experience may also be helpful, you gained so much from those jobs but how do they make you a better candidate than someone else. Also add in the clinical rotations you did, you put in the work during them, and that work should be recognized by future employers! Overall, great job with both and I love the little glimpse into your personality that your resume gave us!
Hi Linds! Your resume looks so awesome and really stands out! The colors make the page pop and catch my eye, drawing me to it and making me want to read more. I love the setup of the first page which highlights your relevant skills and certifications off to the side next to your experience section. I am wondering though if you should create a separate category for work experience in addition to adding a section for your clinical rotation experience. I think a key component to our nursing education careers has been our clinical experiences since they are individual to each of us. We each have had our own clinical experience path at different facilities which is one unique thing that should be emphasized… Like how we did our 12-hour overnight preceptorship together on R1. <3
Similarly to you, I also took the easy route with using the premeditated cover letter template and only filled in minimal areas. The rubric guidelines for this assignment suggests a 4-paragraph setup model and a section highlighting the desired future organization's missions and values. Since you only have three paragraphs, I would create another paragraph pulling this information from Maine MEdical Center's website. I would also reference a specific portion of their mission statement that resonated with you to add a personal element to it. Other than that, you did great! You are going to make a great nurse one day!
Good job on both resume and the cover letter!
For the cover letter, I think your middle paragraph is strong. I think that is lays out what you did at UNE, and how it helped develop your skills. I think you did a good job confidently saying how the skills you developed will be valuable to the team. I would suggest maybe making it a little longer. Maybe by including a paragraph that personalized your cover letter a little bit more will make your resume stand out a bit more. Also maybe by including something that is drawing you to Maine Med will help show to the hiring manager that you truly care about this hospital.
For your resume, I like the skills and certifications section as that immediately shows the hospital that you have these strengths that you are bringing to the table. I think that maybe including your education and expected graduation date at the top of the resume will help the hospital understand where you are at, and why you are applying for the position that you are. That will show them that you are on your way to being a RN which is why you are applying for the position. I also think that if you include your clinical experience and putting it on a separate page will allow the hiring manager understand your experiences.
Great job Lindsey!!
I thought your cover letter was strong and to the point. You mentioned your strengths and why you would be an asset for this position. I think you could add something that would make you stand out from other applicants. You could put something about all of your clinical experiences at MMC since that is where you are applying.
Your resume is very appealing to the eye and you did a great job using action verb. I think it would be a good idea to put your expected graduation from UNE at the beginning of the resume and get rid of your high school graduation bullet point. You should also add a section with all of your clinical and preceptorship experiences.
