Career Development Reflection

The documentary NURSES was really inspirational and overall reminded me why I wanted to be a nurse in the first place. Throughout the video, it shows multiple nurses and you get to hear from a handful of them. They are all thoughtful, caring, and empathetic towards the patients and their families. They advocate and care for the patients to their full potential. This is something I need to work on because while that is the first thing that drew me to nursing however with all of schooling and trying to learn everything, I think sometimes I get caught up in making sure I am doing the right thing, following the rules, or remembering the correct information that I forget to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, and remember why I chose to pursue this job in the first place. Throughout this video, a lot of the nurses worked with children. This is a diverse population that I have not had the chance to work with yet. A major barrier to care that is seen with this population is fear and lack of trust. You really have to be able to bond with the patients in order to gain their trust and ease your ability to provide care to them without a fight. Not only do you need to bond with the patient but also their family. Children especially have lots of family involved in their care and being able to comfort and be there for the family is just as important as it is to be there for the patient. Cultural humility can help ready nurses to care for diverse populations because nurses see so many different situations, and patients and they need to put everything aside and provide the best care possible for every patient regardless of the situation. To improve my equity and quality of care for diverse populations, I want to further learn about the diverse populations in my community. By furthering that education, it can help me to better prepare for what I am going to come across or the people I am going to encounter, which can help me provide proper education or resources for every population.

When preparing for an interview, I will have thoroughly researched hospitals and organizations to find which one I think  is going to be the right fit for me. I will know the core values and  beliefs of the organization and why I would make a good candidate for the job and how I relate to their core values and beliefs. I will also mention some of my strengths such as teamwork and communication that I learned from my clinical rotations through UNE, along with organizational skills and my desire to continuously grow and get better. If future jobs ask me about my weaknesses or challenges I will say that I am always looking for new ways to improve my patient education skills and love learning from others.
